History

North Kansas City High School has been the centerpiece of education in the Northland since 1925. The high school and city of North Kansas City have grown up together and have depended on each other throughout its glorious history. For over 80 years, the school and city have shared facilities, programs, and talent. Both the school and the city have always been nicknamed "Northtown".

North Kansas City High School is known as a "big city" school in a small town. With great neighbors and local businesses, NKC students get to experience a special environment that is very unique to a suburban high school. There has always been a great deal of community service spirit in "Northtown". From the early agricultural classes taught in the 1920's to the esteemed International Baccalaureate program, North Kansas City High School has always strived to provide relevant and rigorous educational opportunities.

The current main building was constructed in 1925 and the field house annex was added in 1951. The cafeteria and music wing was added in 1958. In 1961, a new library was constructed and would later become the current location for the Student Service Center in 2003. The industrial tech/business building was added in 1962. As the school grew, the former Norclay Elementary School became a full time annex for the high school, creating a campus in 1984. There have been several renovations to the campus, including the recent addition of air conditioning, classroom renovations and additions to the Norclay building.

Northtown's famous football stadium was constructed in 1941 and was one of the final Works Progress Administration projects ending the Great Depression in the 1930's. The stone wall surrounding the football stadium was constructed during that time period as well. In 2006, the football stadium was recognized as "the best high school facility in the Kansas City area to view a Friday night game".

Today, North Kansas City is known for its strong academics and commitment to diverse perspectives. In fact, Northtown was recently named the #1 most diverse high school in Missouri! Students can take advantage of a variety of programs, from International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement course offerings to classes in culinary arts, engineering design, and sports marketing.
